I have a lot of British friends who shudder at the idea of an
American actor taking over the lead role on Doctor Who. I’m sorry, my
friends, but the time has come. Just as Superman ("truth, justice, and
the American way") as now been immortalized by an Englishman, it’s time
for your icon to be reinterpreted by one of us.

However, having the Doctor speak with an America accent would just be silly. Henry
Cavill used an American accent for the Man of Steel and whatever
American takes over as the Doctor should use an impeccable English
accent. With that in mind, I think the best choice would be Michael McKean reprising his This Is Spinal Täp role of David St. Hubbins as the Doctor.

English accent? Check. Wacky persona? Check. Colorful fashion sense? Check. Philosophical outlook? Check.

Another creator-owned feature I've been working on is Undead or Alive: Paranormal Bounty Hunters. The first two installments have run in Hoax Hunters
#6 and 7 from Image Comics, with the entire arc scheduled to run in
eight parts. I believe that issue #8 of HH runs with no back-up, so our
feature will resume in issue #9.

I'm writing Undead or Alive, with Jason Millet (who did a spectacular job coloring Athena Voltaire) providing stunning full-color art. UoA is a love letter to monster comics and we hope to spin it off into a full-blown series eventually.
Creator-Owned Day (#CreatorOwnedDay) is a celebration of comics that
are owned by their creators, rather than large corporations. I have a
number of creator-owned books I'm working on, and thought I'd share them
throughout the day.

First up is The Black Cobra, a generational story (1940s and 1960s) of a masked vigilante passing the mantle along to his son.
The cover image, above, is by me with colors by Chad Fidler. The
interior pages are pencilled by Erik Roman, inked by Mark Stegbauer, and
will be colored by Peter Kuebeck, with scripts by me.

Choose is a wonderful funding platform that allows teachers in
underfunded
public school systems to appeal directly to citizens for help in
funding special projects. Since 2000, they have raised more than $100
million to fund classroom projects in public schools across the country,
reaching more than 6 million students.
Donors Choose is a 501c3 organization, meaning your gift is tax
deductible.

My girlfriend, a grade school librarian, has launched
a campaign to expand her school's graphic novel section. They already
have a good-sized GN section—especially considering that the school is
in a high poverty district. But her students, a mixture of native
English speakers and native Spanish speakers, can't get enough of our
favorite art form! To try and meet demand and increase her graphic novel
section, Kerrie has launched a Donors Choose campaign. I'd love it if
you could check it out:

From now until February 18, Donors Choose is running a matching program, Enter the promotion code HEART and they will match your donation!

There's a wide variety of all-ages comic material on the list,
and I hope you will choose to fund the project. Any amount you can
spare will help. As an added incentive, I'll give away some artwork!

If you donate, you will receive a
receipt from Donor's Choice within minutes of making a donation.
Forward that receipt (it includes the amount you donated, but no
personal/financial information) to this address: stevebryantart at gmail
dot com.

For every $10 you donate, I'll enter you in a drawing for the original art to Athena Voltaire: Flight of the Falcon
#3 (pictured at the beginning of this blog post). The artwork measures
11x17 and is ink and brush on bristol board. In fact, it features some
of the best drybrush work I've ever done! So if you donate $10 to the
campaign, you're entered 1 time. If you donate $20, you have 2 entries.
$30 will get you 3 entries, etc...

(I had considered contributing an original
commission, but I have a backlog of folks that I plan to take care of
later this month/early next, so offering an existing piece seems more
fair).

Thanks for considering this! Hopefully, you'll join Kerrie and
myself in inspiring a new generation of comic and graphic novel fans!Steve Bryanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01268295092581273162noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125106083066329702.post-37351175393333981782012-08-17T07:30:00.000-07:002012-08-17T07:33:12.346-07:00Remembering the Work of Joe Kubert

I must have been nine or ten when I first encountered a comic featuring a Joe Kubert cover. Truth be told, I thought it was some of the worst comic art I'd seen—and at that time, I considered myself an expert in the artform.

I'd been raised on a steady diet of Jack Kirby's statuesque demi-gods and John Buscema's powerful matinee idols. And most of my favorite work had been embellished with the slick brush lines of Joe Sinnot or Mike Royer, or occasionally inked with the lush rendering of Tom Palmer.

To my eye, Joe Kubert's work looked rough, sketchy and unfinished.

Flash forward eight to ten years: I found myself in my first life drawing class and experienced gesture drawing for the first time. Everything was about capturing a movement (hence the name, gesture drawing) and recording it. Motion, vitality and spontaneity were king.

It was around this time that the lightbulb went off.

What my untrained 10 year-old eye saw as "rough," was actually boldness. What I thought was "sketchy" was actually immediacy. Where I had previously seen the work as "unfinished," I now saw it as fluid and dynamic.

From that point on, I checked out all the Kubert work I could find. I learned that he was more than just an expert at creating movement. Joe's compositions and storytelling were downright amazing.

I never met the man, but he was my guide on adventures on WWII battlefields, and through primeval jungles. Our expeditions took us from prehistoric earth to unknown galaxies in the far-future. And at every stop along the way, I learned something about art.

Thanks, Joe.

I'm fine when I'm sitting at my table and interacting with people coming up and chatting. In fact, I love it. Small talk, comics talk, movie and TV talk, sports talk...I'll talk your ear off. But take me away from that comfort zone, and I clam up.

I suck at networking.

That's it; the bottom line. If I have to seek someone out, I invariably worry about if they'll remember me (if I've met them before), if I'm blethering on too long or too much, if they're looking for an escape route...pretty much just worried that I'm imposing on their time.

So I end up feeling like Paul Schaffer as Artie Fufkin in this clip from This Is Spinal Tap:

http://youtu.be/cv5FwzRBc_Y

"Hi. Steve Bryant, Athena Voltaire." [shakes hand]

[puke]

This even extends to seeing someone I've met before away from the convention (for instance, I think I've run into comic artist Skottie Young about a half-dozen times and just looked away...and there are a bunch more examples, too)—all because I don't know what to say, or am afraid of imposing on someone's time, or because I'm afraid of being embarrassed if someone doesn't remember who I am.

So that's it; my deep dark convention secret. I'm going to try and come out of my shell a bit more, and interact more this year...but I say that every year. We'll see if it happens this year.

However, I'll be in the Small Press Pavillion, M-14, if you want to stop by and spare me the anxiety. ;)
It’s Indiana Jones by way of Hellboy, starring a Joss Whedon-style female pilot. The series originally launched online at the Modern Tales family of webcomics sites, and earned an Eisner Award nomination.

Below is a teaser short story, The Isle of Death. The "red" cover (above) is for a short that was featured in Double Feature Comics (you can read it in its entirety for a mere 99¢).

I'm currently working on a new AV mini-series The Volcano Goddess, as well as remastering the existing AV material (200 pages or so) into an Omnibus edition (also pictured above).

Contact me for more info on Athena Voltaire, or publishing/rights inquiries.

<img style="float: left; This year marks a decade since Athena Voltaire originally launched as a webcomic. So it's only fitting to celebrate that auspicious anniversary with a return to digital!

Athena Voltaire and the Wings of Death is an 8-page story for Four Star Studios' Double Feature app.

If you're not familiar with Double Feature (or the studio), it's the brainchild of Mike Norton, Tim Seeley, Sean Dove and Josh Emmons (the four stars of 4 Star Studios). Every month, they release a digital comic with two 8-page co-features for only 99¢. Genres range from Action, Horror, Science-Fiction and Fantasy. This month's release is Action, issue #3.

The iPad app allows you to do more than just read the comic. You can strip away the word balloons, the color, and the inks—allowing you to see each stage of the comic's production. Additionally, you get a cool director's commentary that gives insight into the process, the characters, and other stuff!

Not an iPad owner? No prob. The geniuses at 4 Star Studios release every issue of Double Feature in PDF format, too!

It's a great bargain and 100% creator-owned!Steve Bryanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01268295092581273162noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125106083066329702.post-81455396108997342532012-01-11T11:24:00.000-08:002012-01-11T11:32:01.547-08:00Commission: Marshall Law

This one isn't part of my current "Buy an 11x17 commission, get a free page" sale...I drew it a few days before. Years later in middle school, he met a kid who handed him a Punisher comic book and forever changed his life. After college, when money was easier to come by, Jason began buying comics again, transitioning to original comic book art and commissions. This quickly turned into a full fledged hobby. After years of collecting art and making contacts in the comic art world, Jason fell backwards into the art dealing world by helping his friend Rahsan Ekedal with his sales. After a year, he added to his stable by bringing in Joe Eisma.

I've said it a hundred of times, and I'll say it a hundred more times…I never get tired of drawing the Rocketeer.

Here's the description for today's commission:

"Here's what I was thinking, a scene where Rocketeer comes crashing in through a window (skylight? etc) while Betty is tied up or chained to a wall (like girls in pulp books tended to be), maybe in torn clothing, however you want to have fun with it."

This one presented a challenge in that it's tough to fit in both figures, and the setting, AND create a sense of dynamicism. My solution was to put the point of view on one of the characters. Obviously, having the hero big is best, but the compositions I was came up with him in the foreground were shots over Cliff's shoulder or behind him, which makes for a great shot of the jetpack—but not a good shot of the Rocketeer.

Putting Betty in the foreground gave us a dynamic composition, and a front view of the Rocketeer—even if he was smaller. I tried to punch him up by adding some dynamic blacks and having all of the breaking glass radiating around him. Hopefully, this creates a focus on him, even if he's not the large figure.

I usually stay away from any implication of sex/bondage in commissions, but the "bound Betty" in this piece works for two reasons: (1) as the commissioner says, it reflects the pulps of the era, and (2) it's a winking acknowledgment of Betty Page's actual background (which Dave Stevens acknowledged throughout the series).

And the Buddy Commission Surgery Fun Drive continues! Information below:

I haven't stopped doing commissions—I just had to clear some assignments out before finishing more of these. Look for more commissions, plus some other new work on this blog in the coming weeks!

Today's commission features the Legion of Superheroes' Karate Kid sparring with Lady Shiva. The description was " These are two of the best martial artists of all time so I think it would be a great fight. The only thing I ask is that neither character is shown as clearly winning."

This presented a really fun challenge: I didn't want either character to have their backs to us, and I wanted neither in the foreground, overshadowing the other. My compositional instincts led me to "stacking" the characters, with Shiva leaping/kicking, while Karate Kid punches/ducks. Both characters are untouched, but thwarted—evenly matched.

I added in the graphic of the yin/yang symbol to drive home the concept of balance.
Seriously. I've done more commissions of the Rocketeer than any other character besides Athena Voltaire.

And it's always fun!

I'm not thrilled with the scan on this one: some of the subtleties of the clouds are lost (the darks are too dark, and the medium tones are blown out), but the original came out pretty well. Inks and grey marker on 11x17 bristol board.

Buddy, my pooch, needed emergency surgery due to a twisted stomach and bloat. I was devastated to hear that the procedure had a 30–50% mortality rate.

Thankfully, he made it through in good health (YAY!) and is on the road to recovery (see photos: his stitches and him in a T-shirt to prevent chewing on the stitches).

The surgery and health care cost almost $2,000.
Today's commission is DC Comics' Wonder Girl. 9 x 12, ink and Copic markers on bristol board.

Additionally, I'm still accepting preorders for San Diego Comic-Con (July 20–24). As usual, I'm not sure if I'll be doing more than penciled headshots at the show (stagefright), so please consider lining up a commission before the show. If you're an art collector that prefers to have commissions done in your themed sketchbook, you can mail me your sketchbook and I'll be glad to bring it to the show.
