Commission: Lady Shiva versus Karate Kid

I haven't stopped doing commissions—I just had to clear some assignments out before finishing more of these. Look for more commissions, plus some other new work on this blog in the coming weeks!

Today's commission features the Legion of Superheroes' Karate Kid sparring with Lady Shiva. The description was " These are two of the best martial artists of all time so I think it would be a great fight. The only thing I ask is that neither character is shown as clearly winning."

This presented a really fun challenge: I didn't want either character to have their backs to us, and I wanted neither in the foreground, overshadowing the other. My compositional instincts led me to "stacking" the characters, with Shiva leaping/kicking, while Karate Kid punches/ducks. Both characters are untouched, but thwarted—evenly matched.

I added in the graphic of the yin/yang symbol to drive home the concept of balance.

The Buddy Commission Surgery Fun Drive continues! Information below:

PRICING
$40 for an inked single-character piece on 8.5 x 11 (or 9 x 12...depending on what I have lying around). Additional figures, email me for a quote. Plan on $5 for Priority Mail shipping if you won't be picking up the piece at the show.

$80 for an inked single character piece on 11 x 17. Again, for additional figures, email me for a quote. And again, $5 for Priority Mail shipping if you won't be picking up the piece at the show.

Order a 11x17 Commission NOW!

(ink wash added at artist's discretion...let me know up front if it's something you really, really, really have your heart set on.)

I can bring the piece with me to Wizard World Chicago, if you plan on attending, or mail it to you.

More examples of my commissioned work can be found here.

Thanks!

Commission: Wonder Girl

Today's commission is DC Comics' Wonder Girl. 9 x 12, ink and Copic markers on bristol board.

Additionally, I'm still accepting preorders for San Diego Comic-Con (July 20–24). As usual, I'm not sure if I'll be doing more than penciled headshots at the show (stagefright), so please consider lining up a commission before the show. If you're an art collector that prefers to have commissions done in your themed sketchbook, you can mail me your sketchbook and I'll be glad to bring it to the show.

Commission: Batgirl

More than any other character, I always equate the Barbra Gordon Batgirl with fun. No idea why.

I tried to give this piece a playful quality that reflected the sense of fun I see in my head.

Commission: Death

Happy Monday! Today, I give you...Death!

...not for real, of course. Today's entry is the character from Neil Gaiman's groundbreaking series, Sandman.

And I'm still accepting preorders for C2E2 in Chicago. I'm not sure if I'll be doing more than penciled headshots at the show, so please consider lining up a commission before the show. Commission: Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth!

Kamandi is hands-down my favorite of Jack Kirby's solo works. For this commission, a 7 x 10 sketchbook image, I wanted to draw a scene, but had to reconcile the smaller image space. I opted for a riff on Kirby's brilliant to cover issue #1. I had originally penciled the sunken Statue of Liberty in the background before realizing that my horizon line was way off! Ulp!

Thankfully, I hadn't inked it yet!

New Commission: Zatanna

Here's the first of the Comic-Con preorders, Zatanna. I'm still trying to figure out how to get a good greyscale scan with my new scanner—the original isn't as spotty as this scan looks. I'm also posting the inks because it's clearer to see the linework.

8.5 x 11, india ink and Payne's Grey watercolor on bristol board.

Slots are still open. Read about commission preordering details here!

Commission: The Joker

I didn't push the distended chin as much as others do, but I still think he cmae off as creepy. I hope he did, anyway!

Commission: Huntress and Black Canary

After drawing her in three commissions in the last three weeks, I've determined that I really like drawing Black Canary.

A lot.

Commission: Blackhawk

Another quickie commission; this time, it's Blackhawk, DC's swashbuckling aviator. Col-Erase pencil on bristol board, 9" x 12".

Yeah, I was thinking "Bruce Campbell" while drawing it.

That's Really Super, Supergirl

I couldn't help it—if I'm doing a blog post with a Supergirl commission, I have to name-check the XTC song in the title of the post!

Brush and ink on bristol board. 11" x 17"

Commission: Golden Age Flash & Green Lantern

This one was a lot of fun! I needed something to tie it all together and felt that the Justice Society eagle would make a good graphic element.

I enjoy doing pencil commissions, but always feel that they would look better as finished ink drawings. I may end up printing this commission out as a blueline and inking it anyway.

Commission Time: Sgt Rock

I've had some scanner issue of late—which makes it hard when it's an essential tool for doing my job! In hopes of getting enough money to replace both my scanner and my venerable Mac G4, I'm really trying to hit the commissions hard.

When I do tonal work, I have a tendency to try and make everything too smooth! Needless to say, having someone request Sgt Rock was a great way to try and stretch. It was hard to incorporate some of the rough cragginess that flows so naturally from Joe Kubert every time he draws the character, but it was a great learning experience!

A (semi) recent commission

The list of interesting commission concepts continues! The Headless Horseman versus (Green Arrow's sidekick) Speedy! I actually finished this up around Halloween. Appropriate.

I kinda wish that I had inked it, though.

Over at the Athena Voltaire blog, I update the mystery project a little more.
